Créé et interprété par Guillaume Maupin pour le Cinéma Nova à Bruxelles en 2005 le juke-box humain est basé sur des règles simples: le musicien est assis avec sa guitare dans une boîte qui peut prendre différentes formes et tailles. Il est même parfois difficile d’imaginer qu’il y a un véritable être humain capable de loger à l’intérieur… La boîte est tapissée de pochettes vinyles, faisant écho au monde du Jukebox. Le public peut choisir ce qu’il veut entendre dans une liste 200 chansons apprises par coeur !

Il faut alors insérer des pièces, entrer un code sur une calculatrice qui constitue le seul lien physique avec le musicien. La chanson est ensuite interprétée par Guillaume Maupin, parfois proche de l’original, parfois de façon décalée, mais aussi des couplets improvisés en cas de trous de mémoire ou irrépressibles élans d’inspirations.

Le choix de chanson est large et va du répertoire typique de Jukebox (The Beatles, Johnny Cash, Elvis Presley, Bod Dylan…), aux chanteurs folks (Woody Guthrie, Bert Jansch, Roscoe Holcomb…) à la pop plus récente et artistes rocks mainstream (The Cure, Beck, Madonna, Britney Spears, Beyoncé…). De nombreux chanteurs français (Georges Brassens, Jacques Brel, Dominique A…) et des chansons françaises traditionnelles révèlent l’origine du chanteur.

Le Jukebox humain fait aussi la part belle aux musiciens les plus fous comme Sun Ra, Captain Beefheart, Suicide, et aux célèbres «Outsiders» (Daniel Johnston, Wild Man Fisher, The Shaggs, Jean Luc Le Tenia...) ainsi qu’à des artistes étonnants bien que quasi inconnus (Paulo de Domoy, Caillouche, Calypso Fact, Lonely Kid Quentin…).

Le juke-box humain est avant tout un projet musical et son aspect Freak/Art Brut lui donne un statut d’installation/performance, pertinent autant dans la fête privée que dans un grand festival, dans un cinéma ou une salle de concert, médiathèque, bar, ou tout endroit du plus modeste au plus sophistiqué.

Moins cérémonieuse qu’un concert, la performance crée un nouveau type d’interaction entre le chanteur et son public, réactualisant la figure populaire du troubadour et colporteur de chansons.

La magie et le succès du Jukebox humain repose sur le fait qu’il apporte une nouvelle façon de vivre la musique ensemble. Le public, à la fois complice et dupe de cette machine vivante, discute au moment de choisir une chanson, fait des commentaires sans se soucier d’être entendu par le musicien et est très attentif à l’interprétation du morceau. Certains en profitent pour découvrir de nouvelles choses tandis que d’autres prennent plaisir à entendre les tubes ainsi interprétés. La performance donne ainsi toujours lieu à une convivialité étonnante de part l’interactivité simple proposée.

Created and performed by Guillaume Maupin for the Cinema Nova in Brussels in 2005 the Human Jukebox is based on simple rules: the musician is sitting with his guitar inside a box that can take various shapes and sizes. At times, it’s hard to imagine that there is a real human being able to crawl inside it…The box is plastered with vinyls covers, echoing the Jukebox world. A list of nearly 200 songs hangs on one of the sides, all of those learned by heart by the man inside.

The audience is invited to insert coins an enter a song code on a small pocket calculator, the only tangible link with the musician. The song is then performed by Guillaume Maupin, sometimes close to the original one, sometimes in a strange way, and with improvised verses when the actual words are sweeping from his mind…

The song choice is wide and weird, from typical Jukebox material (The Beatles, Johnny Cash, Elvis Presley, Bod Dylan…), folksingers (Woody Guthrie, Bert Jansch, Roscoe Holcomb…) to more recent pop and rock artists (The Cure, Beck, Madonna, Britney Spears, Mickael Jackson…). Many French singers (Georges Brassens, Jacques Brel, Dominique A…) and French traditionnal songs revealing the singer’s origin.

Alongside freak musicians like Sun Ra, Captain Beefheart, Suicide, famous « Outsiders » ( Daniel Jonhston, Wild man Fisher, The Shaggs, Jean Luc Le Tenia...) and even unknown and unheard of amazing artists (Paulo de Domoy, Caillouche, Calypso Fact, Lonely Kid Quentin…).

The Human Jukebox is first a musical project and experience, its Freak/Art Brut installation aspect fits perfectly for big or small events. From the circus/carnival- like events, to big festivals, or even private parties and as the highlight of crazy venue-type event.

The Human Jukebox is also an “Anti concert” experience, giving the audience the opportunity to rediscover live music. It is a way for famous and unknown songs to travel, making no difference between Pop, traditional music, jazz, chansons, rock'n roll, turning the interpret into a modern Troubadour figure.

The Magic and success of the Human Jukebox relies on the fact that it brings a new way to experience music together. People, amused by the dichotomy of the machine and live feeling, are talking when choosing their song, are making comments without fear close the musician, pay attention to the interpretation aspect. It shapes an event into a very special social experience.
